Headed off into the desert next week – Joshua Tree in California, actually. Just as important to me as food and water is a good stack of books. I’m not bringing my e-reader, in fact, I am kinda over it. There will be no place for me to plug my book in. I picked up a cadre of questionable literature from some notables and am thoroughly engrossed. Antiquated visions of the future by great thinkers still have resonance, for example, Heinlein writing of a religious dictatorship in the US by the middle of the 21st century. yikes. Part of the pleasure of these old books is their simple tactile quality: the color of the paper, the worn smell, the thin shape…
