Under the world: the glorious abyss. Stretching 250 feet under the Sierra Foothills, the limestone caverns at Black Chasm near the Gold Rush town of Volcano in Amador County. Calcite flowstone, a quarter of a million years old forms pipe organs in this chthonic cathedral – a cathedral so beautifully sublime and serene that all the machinations and designs of man fall pitifully short… Here, we can finally remember a certain wild wonder and a true divine inspiration without the burdensomeness of light, day and time. They say there are thirteen chambers that extend more than a mile under ground – only three are open to the public for touring – as harrowing as this all is, it’s enough for me. -Obi.
