How I begin to tell a story that has no real beginning was one of the many great challenges I had in developing the California Field Atlas. The solution I present is a circular structure: a narrative where the past is the future and where, all things being equal, we can predict one because we know the other. The decoded landscape radiates a welcoming geography of sustainability and hope. #californiafieldatlas (Part 3 of3) My bird of prey weaves balance like a basket across a feathered sky. The secret of the predator is the health of the whole algorithm. Our competitiveness, an insatiable fist that demands of us the assumption to take on all the roles, to become all the characters - starving the network with our shadow function. Between the hunter and the hunted, the feeder and the fed, the user and the used is only the exchange of energy; the ethics of the human interruption upon this global covenant is the dogged work of each caring generation, past and future, obfuscated in the recent centuries by the blinding radiance of our industrial modernity. #trailpaintings (Part 2 of 3) My garden's ancient spectrum, where all wildness is reassuringly remembered as common place color, spreads from the prism of the tiny jay's eye. Bouncing forever between states of threat, the blue-coated dancer and I wonder at what part of the world we might ever fit in to, then after the long silence we press ever ahead with only groundless faith in the larger unfolding beauty to carry us in what we call safety. #trailpaintings (Part 1 of 3) My wolf's great great great great grandparents were expelled past the rusted and swollen curtain that is California's border a hundred years ago. Having been branded evil, she diminished in waiting for the human-people to see the power in patient wilderness, a settling into the responsible character we were always meant to become. The triumphant hunt is always celebrated by and necessarily after the long art of the watching wait - if only my boiling mind could understand this. #trailpaintings Matt @deckro and I have been working together for ten years. I could not imagine a finer gentleman or a more genius soul to whittle away the hundreds of art-making hours with that we spend together, spinning magic. Dark eyes in the dark mirror smile in the short night. We know that we will never catch each other unless we can follow orders quickly and find the midnight flowers before dawn. Running from and running to yield the same results, like a one-sided coin, like the happy merger of predator and prey. Tonight we dream of the bountiful hunt and we allow ourselves to enjoy that we can't tell if that jewel in the sky is the sun or the moon. If I can better echo the deep song connecting whatever I think of as me to the forest, or to the natural force behind its living tapestry, how would my voice sound? Would it boom and crash with scientific pride, edging out uncertainty with sunlight and volume? Or might it only whisper to its maximized ends - a silver sliver of the moon, softly whistling secrets to the quiet birds and bugs at night? Conscious voice influences human truth and all of nature comes now to learn what exactly that is. #trailpaintings Nesting season for three of the Redwood Coast's robin-sized, precious and endangered seabirds. #marbeledmurrelet #snowyplover #cassinsauklet #trailpaintings The word forest had begun to climb in my mind, out from its classical definition as a simple wooded region with a closed canopy. In the Anthropocene, the forest is becoming any expansive yet bordered region where the poetry of the natural world still holds its ancient covenant to the unity of all wild things. In the Anthropocene, the forest is characterized by its adolescence as the venerable trees and so many of their neighborly relations have been so recently spent by the humans that would steward only to exploit. In the Anthropocene, the forest is not any singular entity, but defined now everywhere by humanity and its sequestration from it. All the primeval world has retreated to the forest and yet it remains open - open and welcoming for your wonder; an original source for you to freely tap. California Trail Painter summer pack, ready. I sat there quietly, saw that they were intrinsically made from the original, dancing fire and they opened me up to the broadest of all natural visions. My fingers, my wrists now imbued, work only to translate to the best of their clumsy ability, to again communicate the wonder of all-form in this true place. Only by analyzing nature's large patterns are we led by metaphoric vehicles capable of transmitting the deepest truths, which always indicate interdependence and the unity of all networks. #trailpaintings I am putting together the impressively difficult task of my super-ambitious book tour for the California Field Atlas, this autumn. Three ravens sing of us all in the new day, from the archaic visions (of nature as the old enemy and the kingdom of low animals) to the new welcoming. How the song surrounds and permeates us! Tentative inclusion to the storied processes of all non-sorrowful nature, that we may recognize the fight not as a combat, but a ritual dance. #trailpaintings
